Psycle London | Spinning in Shoreditch

If you asked me about spinning over a year ago, you’d have got a very blunt and definite answer – I hate it. But now, I’m a total convert – and that’s all down to Amy Bateman’s class at the Virgin Active in Barbican. I’m now one of these city-dwellers who is addicted to spinning, booking into my class in record time before it inevitably gets full.

In my bid to explore London’s best spin classes and get my high-energy cycling fix, I tried out Psycle – The name blends cycle and ‘psyche’, which is Greek for soul or spirit. Could it really be that different from the spinning classes that I take part in at my normal gym? I mean, spinning is spinning… right?

Classes at Psycle start from £20 for 1 credit, but they offer an introductory pack for 2 credits for £20. I went one weekend to their studio in Shoreditch, which hidden down an alleyway decked out in street art. The space is white, open and very minimal, a complete contrast to the spin studio; which is down in the basement, with no windows and flashing LED disco lights.

Cycling shoes are included in the price (always a nice bonus), and as a newbie, my instructor came over to me and helped me get my feet into the pedals and adjust my bike. As you enter the class, you’re also told to grab some hand-weights. This is because the classes are designed to give you a full-body work out using choreography and weights, which focus on the riders all riding in sync together with the music rather than just racing on your own.

Music is a big theme at Psycle and the tunes really help to carry the class – and one thing I love about this studio is that you can check out a snippet of the instructor’s playlist online before you book into their class.

If it wasn’t for my shoes being strapped into the bike, I would have fallen off at the end of the class. After our cooldown and stretch, I wobbled towards the door, ready for a sweaty high-five with my instructor, full well knowing that I’d be back for more.

London’s Best Boutique Gyms

I feel like I’ve hit such a slump. Usually I’m pretty good at motivating myself to lace up my trainers and go to a run, or hit the weights. I’m stuck in a rut and really want to refresh my fitness game – I’m in dire need of a break away from my overcrowded gym.

So, if you’re like me and looking for something to boost you up this month, here are a few of my top boutique gyms that you need to train in…

1Rebel

The changing rooms at 1Rebel are sure to have graced many an Instagram feed – they’re spacious, with large bronze lockers and heated white tiled benches. They’re got two studios both close to Liverpool street which focus on three classes: Cycle (spinning); Reshape (HIIT using treadmills and benches); and Rumble (boxing). Be prepared – their classes are challenging and are the perfect thing to reignite your fitness mojo.

Blok

You’ll find Blok in a converted warehouse in Clapton. It’s seriously swish with exposed brickwork and steal beams. The type of place you’d expect a hip restaurant to open up in, but instead it’s equipt with kettlebells and boxing bags. There are two studios, one which is dedicated to boxing and dance-fit, and the second is for yoga, barre and pilates. Be sure to try out their grueling signature class, BlokFit.

F45

F45 stands for Functional 45 – basically training for 45 minutes. Each class focuses on a combination of bodyweight and weight exercises in different circuit. The classes are designed in a way in which everyone encourages and supports each other, which is seriously motivating. Right now you can sign up for 7 classes for just £7! Money well spent.

Another Space

The black and white sleek decor is what got me through the door here, but what makes me want to go back to Another Space is their HIIT class, a mix of boxing and floor work. Plus the changing rooms are packed with everything you could possible need, including hair ties and grips!

Ethos

If you tired of the divide between yoga and sports and no longer want to think of them as separate activities, then Ethos is the place for you. They’ve recently expanded into London, smack bang in the centre of Spitalfields Market. If you’ve never used TRX before, then this is definitely the place to try it. It’s a type of bodyweight exercise that develops strength, balance, flexibility and core stability simultaneously.

HIIT at Another Space

June has been definitely been my month for trying out new gyms and shaking up my routine. This week, I finally got round to checking out Another Space and it’s stunning. I was so impressed with how clean and white the space was – it’s got a smoothie bar and cafe, with spacious changing rooms equipped with fluffy towels and cowshed skin and hair products, plus ghd straighteners and dryers.

It’s the new pay-as-you go concept gym from Third Space and it’s located on Tower Street, Covent Garden. They offer Cycle, HIIT and Yoga and the idea is that you should do all three in balance.

I tried the HIIT class with Naomi on Saturday morning and it was amazing! It was super intense and our trainer really pushed us and demonstrated all the moves before hand, so there’s no getting lost. It’s a boxing / circuit training class and you’ll spend your time between the bags or doing resistance training. You’ll do a 5 minute warm up, then alternative between the bags and the floor for a total of 3 rounds on each.

Their HIIT class only started this week, so no doubt they’ll be some tweaks – the gloves were rubbish and remove quite alot of skin from my knuckles but they’re being replaced asap.

I’m yet to the the Cycle and Yoga classes, but both the studios look fab. If you’re ever in the area I’d definitely recommend checking out at least a couple of classes. It’s a great place to kickstart your weekend on a Saturday morning before feasting on some of the many brunch spots nearby.
